MTK Police Blotter
Lucky Rescue
A sailor who was competing in the Bermuda One-Two race from Newport to Bermuda ran into some serious trouble and had to be rescued off of Montauk. Jay Sharkey was the only man aboard the 22-foot sailboat that was rescued by the Coast Guard in Montauk and brought him back to Carl Darenberg's Montauk Marine Basin. There were no injuries reported and the cause of the boat wreck was the weather. Mr. Sharkey was found cold, but not suffering from hypothermia. A passing boat that saw the trouble was responsible for calling the Coast Guard.
DWI
A 20-year-old man from Woodbury was changed with DWI in Montauk after police saw him driving erratically on the road. When he was stopped, the man was given a field sobriety test which he failed. Another DWI was reported after police caught a man from New York City driving with a broken taillight. When the officer got in front of the vehicle, the man was obviously intoxicated, with the smell of alcohol coming through the car and with glassy eyes. He failed a sobriety test and was taken to jail.
Blocking Traffic
A young man had a little bit too much to drink in Montauk and decided to stand out in the middle of the road and forced cars to drive around him. Police were called and the man, who was intoxicated, began to walk away from officers who grabbed him to see what was going on. The man was subsequently arrested.
Fish Fight
Two grown men began to have a loud argument in a bar in Montauk over who caught a bigger fish over the weekend. The argument became so loud that the two men made many of the patrons of the bar uncomfortable. Some left the bar while others tried to calm the two men down. Eventually the two men left the bar and no police needed to get involved. There is still no indication on whose fish was bigger.
Teen Trouble
Teens having a party on the beach with a bon-fire were met with some police headlights last week. Some of the teens were given police citations for drinking alcohol while other teens left the scene.
Harassment
A 19-year-old man from New Jersey was arrested in Montauk and charged with harassment after police were called into a disturbance in the area. The man was arrested and the case is still on going.
