Man On The Street
Are Shark Tournaments Cruel and Unnecessary or a Great Way to Spend the Weekend?
|
Heather Brown, 17

"I think the idea behind it is cruel and wasteful as so many species of shark are already endangered. When the tournaments put the shark meat to good use, I guess that it's not as wasteful and does actually do some good, but I don't think I'll be out shark-fishing anytime soon."

"I think tournaments are a money-making opportunity for Montauk, which is great. When it comes to recreational shark-fishing though, I think that there should be necessary permits that you have to apply for by number. I personally would not go shark fishing recreationally, because I don't want to add to the over-fishing problem we already have."

"I don't think that shark tournaments themselves are cruel, as I've fished before in an MBCA tournament. I would say, though, that recreational shark-fishing is unnecessary because absolutely anyone can do it and there are no licenses needed. The great thing about tournaments is that, in so many of them, all of the unwanted shark meat is donated to soup kitchens."
