Trek For Kids

A 120 mile trek on foot for Friends of Karen ended triumphantly last week in Montauk with the goal to raise awareness for a tri-state organization that helps children diagnosed with life-threatening Illnesses

"In times of need people should be able to look to their neighbors for a hand up and the community should always be willing to lend that hand," said Melville resident Ira Zaroff, before embarking on a 120 mile trek on foot from the Montauk Point Lighthouse to North Woodmere Park in western Nassau County to raise awareness for Friends of Karen. Zaroff, and Mark Singer, MD, who both set out at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, successfully ended their journey just after noon on Sunday.

Zaroff and Singer, an attorney and an internist, respectively, both husbands and fathers of two young girls each, were joined along the way by a few other supporters of the organization. They touted the tri-state organization for its mission of helping families with children diagnosed with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses with financial, emotional and advocacy help. In 2008, the organization helped 1,285 children with services through its Family Support Program.

"Friends of Karen does important work for families going through unimaginably trying times and we want to help however we can so that this important organization can continue to help those in our communities who need a hand up," said Zaroff.
