The news about Rita Foster digging down deep and coming up with the idea of offering a farm stand to Montauk is excellent. Montauk could use a farm stand and there will be a big demand for it. Fresh eggs and fresh vegetables directly off a local farm taste better, I don't care who you are, and on top of that it's a great thing for kids to experience and see how food is grown and where it really comes from.
The story behind this story however is the tough economic times that a lot of small business owners across the country are experiencing and why it is ever more important to support them and keep them going. Rita literally was ready to sell all of her horses to somebody else because it was becoming too difficult to feed them, only to find out that anybody interested in buying a horse couldn't afford to feed them either.
But as the country weathers this rough storm, what is fantastic is that good things grow from tough weather, and thanks to this tough weather, Montauk is going to get one hell of a farm stand and we all can feel good about it. As time goes on, you can expect more businesses, new businesses popping up from the ground and each one should be celebrated. This is what America and what Montauk is all about. I personally can't wait to cook myself some breakfast with some fresh eggs from her farm stand.
The season is here and the activity in town in Montauk has gone up one hundred fold. I was out for a beer last night and spotted Montauk local Joe Stavola who told me that things were good at the Harvest restaurant. Things that night were certainly good at The Point, which was packed all night long, and I celebrated the tradition of crossing the street and checking out the Memory Motel bar for a bit. It was also very busy.
Whether you are in the mood for an ice-cold beer with a bunch of young people or are in the mood for fresh veggies grown from the ground and a pony ride with your family, Montauk offers the best of living.
On a side note, if I hear one more thing about this ridiculous Montauk Monster 2 that was found in Southold I'm going to have to throw some punches. There is only one Montauk Monster and that monster came from Montauk and that's final.
Whether or not either one of them was a simple picture of a dead raccoon or other common animal is another story. Personally, I like the monster story better, and I have a feeling the rest of the world does also.
