One well kept secret is the Rummage Sale that is held every Saturday from 9 a.m. till noon starting Memorial day Weekend to Labor Day that the Montauk Community Church offers. As the snowbirds slowly return from Florida, many do their spring cleaning and are more than happy to donate their clothes, furniture, kitchen wares and jewelry to the Church.
The Women's Guild with its President, Iris Mitchell, Vice President Aster Stein Treasurer Christine Herbert, Publicity and Secretary Martha Nicholoulias and the many volunteers who help do a fantastic job all year round in organizing this great event so bargain hunters like me can experience the joy of shopping. It is like the feeling of going to a shoe sale at Gimbles and Macy's Department Store. The anticipation is exhilarating and the bargains are even more awesome! One does not feel guilty at all because you know that the money spent is going for a good cause. Being a regular customer myself, I can truly say that there are great findings each time I go there. It is such a happy place where everyone is friendly. As you go from room to room, you get to know the volunteers on a first name basis, be it the Elephant room or the kitchen room, women's department, men's, children's, or linens department one is bound to pick something up at a very reasonable price. Even avid golfers can find great golf balls and artists can find great frames for their precious paintings or pictures. You name it, the Rummage has it, except for heavy furniture.
Montauk is a magical place. It is a smorgasbord for anyone who loves life. Surrounded by miles and miles of beautiful white, sandy ocean beach one can't help but feel relaxed and rejuvenated after a week-end stay in the Village. Whether you are one or ninety-nine years young, one can always find something to love in Montauk.
Many know Montauk for being the fishing capital of the world, especially catching the huge bass or blue fish. For seafood lovers, it's one of the best in the country. Many come to visit the oldest working Lighthouse in New York, The Montauk Point Lighthouse commissioned by President George Washington in 1796, 213 years ago. Situated at the furthest point of Long Island, there are bumper stickers saying "The End" or "The Beginning of The End." One can't help but feel part of nature when looking out into the horizon of the Atlantic Ocean. People from all walks of life: Bicyclists, joggers, surfers, bird watchers, seal watchers, whale watchers, horse lovers, golfers and artists come to find their passion.
Won't you join in the fun and come every Saturday from now until Labor Day. I promise that you won't be disappointed. All proceeds go to the Church's Building Fund.
