Montauk Surfing Really Big Waves!
Aloha! The rip roaring summer of 2008 ended Monday on a high-note with solid 4 to 6 foot glassy surf that spawned occasional 8 foot clean-up peaks. This set the stage for an exciting three day session thanks to storm generated ground swell lines expected to increase in height early on Tuesday.
This is what we live for. The very thing we memorialize and when that moment is upon us, all else ceases and our personal lifelong lessons are implied while attempting to carve our very own personal hallmark onto clean faces. We travel at times up to 600 feet northwest onto the sand, where it all began, fronting the lifeguard stand, illustrating the ultimate ride at Ditch Plains!
Donavon Frankenreiter and those in attendance at his sunset performance Sunday set the surfing stage for the approaching ground swell lines rolling in upon our shores before the crack of dawn. These waves were literally responsible for filled-to-capacity public parking lots by 7:00 a.m. with those surfers and beach enthusiasts whom answered the early morning surf bell.
I knew that my friend was in good spirits because he strummed his guitar with grace from the start, yet when that alarming melody sounded, cuing him to take the lead, he plucked away at his well worn acoustic guitar perfectly as if to say "Every Thing's Going to Be Alright" as was the theme or hidden message to a soulful surfer style musical performance that penetrated deep into the waning hearts of many!
"This is incredible" he said, in a deep and sincere tone of voice as I asked him what he thought about our Montauk surfing scene that included beautiful faces, well dressed waitresses and the most glamorous ladies complimenting those casually dressed, defining the view before us as we blended harmoniously with a gratified and emotionally charged audience. All of this took place while overlooking the cleverly designed surf style out of doors dockside stage, beach fire pit, lounge and dining area locations an hour after a near perfect performance at the "Lodge."
Summer 2008 started with fireworks and ended with a huge blast, with the force of a one megaton atomic warhead and one we will certainly remember as the best ever, because all of this occurred amongst a record populous with little or no personal infractions at the beach each summer day. Everything spilled over to select recreational outlets in and out of town.
It's amazing to see what can transpire when we play nicely together in the lineup while excluding our personal emotions from the emotionally fragile mix, applying only that peaceful energy generated through good surf, cheerful fellowship, quality foods, great music and fine refreshments amongst new, old and existing friends.
Many have tilled the soil for years here as an attempt to cultivate the Montauk surfing scene and when I asked famous author and playwright, Allen C. Weisbecker, what he thought of Sunday's beach scene while glancing down the beach from "Ditch to Poles," he said that, "It's nice to see so many content beachgoers and something we've been working on for forty years," speaking softly and in modest fashion.
I told Allen Weisbecker how many of us have become the recipients of good fortune and within the most harmonious and exciting surf scene on the globe, knowing that it was his motive all along, he smiled, still amazed with the colorful beach scene that fine afternoon.
The stage has been set for Montauk Surfing. All that is required is passionate and tender loving care, polishing our scene with the finest satin cloth to ensure that it remains on course and with moderate growth, improving each year with time, paving the way for a global example in the years to come.
There are many waves to be had and the summer surf has prepared many for the world-class surfing upon us. Take care of your mind, body and soul, supplying them with copious amounts of rigorous exercise, good surf, routine meditation, smart foods, cheerful fellowship, family, friends, calming music and exciting refreshments.
Quote of the Week: If you take care of your surfing, surfing will take care of you.
- Allen C. Weisbecker Montauk Legend, Author, Play-write and Global Soul Surfer
See you in the water!
