From his perch in Cutchogue, photographer Jake Rajs captures the great rugged beauty of this eastern Long Island outpost. LIFE, Esquire, Travel & Leisure and National Geographic have all hosted his photographs on their pages and their assignments have taken him far afield. When it comes to New York, however, the lensman has a particularly honed eye. In his book on the North Fork, Land, Sea and Sky, we wander through the sleepy towns and quiet bays with a sense of intimate acquaintance with the area.
Beyond the Dunes, which came out this summer, is devoted to the South Fork's bounty. The dark green, seafoam-whipped Atlantic Ocean and a Gin Lane 'cottage' in early morning mist convey Rajs' talent in capturing the romance of seaside life. It might not surprise to learn that Rajs tried his hand at poetry before committing himself to photography.
