Barbara Walters

In order to write her tell-all memoir, Audition, the no-holds-barred interviewer had to treat herself with as much rigor and voracity as she does her guests on 20/20. The highly publicized book unabashedly dives into every crevice of her life, reveling in both her successes and scandals, one of which includes a 1970s affair with the then-married U.S. Senator Edward Brooke. Five pages are devoted to Robert Katz, her first husband, who died in the Hamptons earlier this year. "I didn't see the reason in writing a book if it wasn't going to be honest," she said in an interview this summer with Dan's Papers. Despite taking an oath-approach to writing, Walters did make an omission that seems mammoth to East End readers. Cleanly spliced from the pages was that Katz's stepdaughter, Toni, was married to Roy Radin, a hard-partying producer (and former owner of Calvin Klein's palatial manse in Southampton) who in 1983 was murdered in connection to his soured deal to finance Richard Gere's The Cotton Club. The scandal made national headlines and rocked the sleepy hamlets of the Hamptons. Perhaps the journalist famous for bringing her subjects to tears at last found a subject "too close to home."
