| Hampton Style - May 23, 2008 |
In every issue this summer we will chronicle a different community in the Hamptons; from artists to billionaires, from the media elite to Hollywood East. What could be more enticing than knowing precisely who our neighbors are out here, the bold-faced names with whom we share our coveted summer weekends? In this Memorial Day issue, we combine everyone in one master list, so better to flaunt the range and depth of talent and diversity that exists in our sun-soaked hamlets. Use it to cull guests for lively dinner parties. Scan it to better inform your Hampton star-sightings. And of course, spot-check it to see if your own name appears here.

Calvin Klein
Leave it to the master of clean design to finally make sense out of one of the Hamptons' most infamous and curious estates. In years past, when the rest of us drove down Dune Road, we simply gaped at the overbuilt Gothic, turreted castle, a nd spoke of its storied past: the shark ("Smiley") who swam in the home's former grotto; the full-scale English pub embedded within its walls; the mayor of Southampton who was voted out of office when it came to light he was essentially being bribed by Barry Trupin (one of the sprawling home's former owners) to ignore any and all building codes. It's taken considerable minimalist discipline by Klein to pare back the home's confusing design elements and reveal its potential, and no one is better suited to such a task than he. Despite the home's name, Elysium (Greek mythology's moniker for the place the blessed go when they die), the recently retired fashion designer has been anything but sedentary as he spends his hard-won liberty working around the clock to complete this local treasure.

Gwyneth Paltrow
With Steven Spielberg as a godfather, it's little wonder that Gwyneth Paltrow ultimately settled here in the Hamptons, after years abroad in England and plenty of time clocked in Hollywood. While she spent many summers as a guest at Quelle Barn (Spielberg's home), even holding her wedding there, she finally settled in Amagansett last year along with husband Chris Martin (Coldplay's frontman) and their two children, Apple and Moses. Gwyneth's household in the Hamptons made headlines last summer when it was revealed how much she was paying for her nanny and staff to reside off-premises ($20,000 a month, according to New York magazine), and this year the extended family also includes her mother, Blythe, who is building a home on the neighboring vacant property. Paltrow's Iron Man broke all kinds of box-office records this month and her latest film, Two Lovers, co-starring Joaquin Phoenix, just premiered at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival.
