Fashion designer and philanthropist Donna Karan and her daughter, Gabby Karan DeFelice, are going into business side-by-side this season in Sag Harbor. On Memorial Day weekend, Karan opens her Urban Zen boutique on Bay Street. Exclusive to this location, the 2,000-square-foot store will offer Balinese furniture, rare photographs and antique jewelry, along with the Urban Zen Collection, which uses only sustainable, recycled fabrics that promote comfort and serenity. The progressive boutique will also serve as a space for rotating art exhibits. Next door, Karan DeFelice has purchased an interest in Tutto Il Giorno, formerly co-owned by the late Steve Florio. To the delight of her mother, Gabby is handling the design and décor of the quaint Italian eatery, which shares a flower garden with Urban Zen and will reopen officially Memorial Day weekend to coincide with the opening of her mother's store.
John Varvatos
54 Newtown Lane, 631-324-4440
With impeccably constructed men's clothing and furnishings, the edgy designs take heavy cues from rock 'n' roll, with a particular fondness for punk. Previous ad campaigns have included such disparate muses as Alice Cooper and Iggy Pop, and the former CBGB club venue in Manhattan is the site of a Varvatos store which opened last month. No less than Joan Jett, Slash and Perry Farrell were on hand to welcome the new tenant, who had the good taste to preserve part of the original club under glass. Here in East Hampton, you'll just have to settle for comfortable, lushly designed interiors.
