It's always 9 to 5 in some time zone, right?" says one of Sotheby's only remaining original East End brokers. "I spoke to a client at midnight last night, then another at five this morning. When you work at this level, you always have to be available." Grant was running a horse farm when he decided to start selling real estate to supplement his income in the early 80s. He was the number-one ranked broker in the nation by New York magazine in 2005 and this year he has already sold more than $100 million in property. Charismatic and doggedly industrious, Grant's keen insight of the high-end market has led to an impressive roster of clients: European royalty, celebrities and business tycoons, most of whom have become repeat customers and all of whom he keeps confidential. When asked about his vaulted status by the media he is quick to say he considers himself lucky to be working among so many talented brokers on the East End. "When you work this hard, you become successful," he says. Not one to rest on his laurels he adds: "Once you reach this level of success, it drives you even more. The market is always changing and there's no time to lag."
