Robert A.M. Stern
Guild Hall's current renovation and the 1997 additions to East Hampton's Library are a credit to a man who juggles many roles, including that of Dean of the Yale School of Architecture. Robert A.M. Stern is an architect, teacher, and writer whose namesake firm has been designing homes on the East End since the mid-1960s. One of his most interesting projects here is the conversion of a collection of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century timber-framed houses to create a new East Hampton Town Hall campus. Farther afield, Stern and his firm have projects underway in 26 states as well as in locations as diverse as Jamaica, Germany, Brazil, Turkey, India and China. Among these are Fifteen Central Park West, a luxury residential building on a full city block in New York City and the recent commission to design the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum in Dallas. One of the foremost historians of New York City's development history, he co-authored a five-volume series on the city's architecture and urbanism and hosted the 1986 PBS series, "Pride of Place: Building the American Dream."
