Dan's Letters

TRI-HAMLET COMMUNITY RESPONSE
Dear Dan,
We got it …… Mastiff
Beach, lol!
It has been said many times that
any publicity is good publicity so it is interesting to see our
name mentioned by Dan’s Papers.
Most people who come down to the
waterfront in Mastic Beach are pleasantly surprised after all the
bad press they have heard.
As a peninsula, we have beautiful
sunlight and open bay views better than most hamlets. We have three
marinas, private docks, a beautiful golf course, several historic
sites, and access to miles of Fire Island National Seashore. There
are town plans for main street revitalization and many newly built
and rebuilt homes. While there are “pockets of resistance”
inland and a main street in critical condition, we are currently
addressing those problems. We of the Pattersquash Creek Civic Association
are actively working very hard to improve our area. We have joined
together with the Mastic Beach Property Owners Association Quality
of Life Committee, The Mastic Park Civic Association, The Smith
Point Beach Property Owners Association and the Smith Point Community
Development Corporation to address important quality of life problems
in the Tri- Hamlet community.
Just as in the Hamptons before the
boom, many of us are entrepreneurs, professionals, artists, writers,
editors, lawyers, nurses, schoolteachers, principals, and military
veterans who started as weekenders, and who enjoy the same waterfront
as the Hamptons, but cannot afford 3-50 million dollar water views.
We share the same water for the price a middle or upper middle class
person can afford for a second home.
We are trying harder, so it would
be nice if you would try harder to say something positive about
our town. The “down and out” stigma does not quite apply
anymore.

HOW FAR DOES DAN’S PAPERS
REALLY TRAVEL?
Dear Dan,
I read your paper all the time, and
think it’s great. I noticed the advertisement for the “How
Far Does Dan’s Papers Travel” contest and would like
to know how to enter. What is meant by “dateline” from
your paper?
I am currently a working as a third
mate aboard a ship that is out east.... Very far east, as in eastern
Asia, when I am not at home in Sag Harbor. Does that count as being
far away? I’m lucky enough to have my parents send me a copy
while I am at work here in Yokohama, Japan.
Thanks for your help and great writing.
Best Regards.
Tom Loreto

The dateline is the date on the top
line of every page to show that you had the issue of the paper with
you. Just send it back. – DR
SOME THANK YOUS
Dear Dan,
Re: Rose’s Walk 4 Darfur
Dear Friends, Family, and Neighbors,
Firstly, we have already raised over
$700 towards the Save Darfur Coalition. I would like to thank Sue
Grapel, Carol Saltzman and family, Marlene Spigner, Andrew Horowitz,
Judy Simon and family, Seymour Cohen, Gerri Robbins, Barbara Brennen,
Rabbi Greenfeld, and Meryl Lipton for their generous donations toward
this cause.
Anyone who is interested in learning
more about my project and the atrocities in Darfur can visit and/or
donate at my webpage, www.savedarfur.org/page/event/detail/w7h.
In addition, quite a few people have
already volunteered to walk portions of my walk with me. I would
like to thank Rabbi Liss, Cantor Micah, Howard and Ann Horowitz,
Carol Taddonio, Marilyn Welsher, Ceren Koray, Arielle Frank, Emma
Saccone, Jim Rhodes, Anthony Bilardi, Sue Grapel, Marlene Spigner,
Judy Simon, Barbara Brennen, Jeff Lavender, and my parents, Meryl
and Leslie Lipton for their support and volunteering to walk a portion
with me.
People are invited to join me on
portions of my walk for a day, a morning or just a mile as I walk
through or near by their communities. I plan to walk with green,
white, and black balloons so I can be easily spotted on my route.
I also want to thank Debbie Starker
from Debs-Web for including my project on her online newsletter
in her member-to-member section.
Lastly, I have finished mapping out
my routes for every day of my walk. In addition to my written itinerary,
which I attached to my last email, you can also find actual maps
of each day’s route at http://profile.mapmyrun.com/RosesRun.
There is a complete map for each day that can be printed out.
Thank you for your continuing support.

ONE ARTIST TO ANOTHER
Dear Dan,
How wonderful to see one of your
drawings announcing your show!
I got a particular kick out of it,
in that the first gallery in the Hamptons I ever showed in was the
Tower Gallery on South Main Street run by Gary Lajeski. (Amazing
that I remember his name). Sounds like the same gallery, and how
nice to know something’s around from the Elaine Benson days!
Hope all is well and success with
the show……
