HUMANITARIAN?

Dear Dan,
I was very disappointed by the October 19th "Who's Here" article on Vanessa Redgrave by Patrick Christiano and Barry Gordin. Christiano and Gordin gushingly depict Redgrave as a saintly humanitarian, but it was Redgrave who just a few years ago very publicly and loudly supported Arab terrorism against Israel and called for the extermination of the Jewish State. I am not aware that she has ever retracted, much less apologized for, these violent and genocidal positions. Can someone who supports terrorism and the extermination of a nation ever be called a humanitarian?

Sincerely,
Yehuda Shapiro

KING CABLES

Dear Dan, I'm glad someone else noticed the attractive job LIPA is doing on County Road 39! Why would we even doubt that they would keep local aesthetics in mind with their plan for the new power lines?

IN MEMORY

Dear Dan, What memories I have about Nick Monte and Gurney's Inn. A few years after we bought our home in Montauk, one day in the wintertime, the pipes froze and burst. Everything was submerged in water and ruined except my diary. I'm sure that was destined to be. That's another story! Anyway, on that frozen-piped day we obviously could not stay at our home, and we called Gurney's to see if there were any rooms available. Not only were there rooms available but also Nick Monte offered us a cottage by the sea. Our family arrived, including Pinky, our Chihuahua/terrier, and we were escorted to this lovely cottage and greeted with flowers from Nick and a fireplace with a fire going. What a welcome! It was paradise! I will never forget Nick's gift to us. He was a great man and so kind and generous. Our spirits went from gloom and doom to Hurrah! And I'm sure that his kindness and generosity contributed to my passionate feelings about Montauk and played a significant role in my inspiration to write the song "Old Montauk."

Thank you Nick.

WHERE'S YOUR DEER HEAD AT?

Dear Dan, Before Mr. Delsener (Letters Nov 2, 2007) decided to denigrate hunters for tying their "kill" to the car's hood or exposing the dead deer in the back of a pick-up truck, he would have been well-served to read NYS hunting laws, which very explicitly state that the head of the animal HAS to be visible when transported in order to prove it has been taken legally. Hiding a dead deer in the trunk of a car or covering it completely in the truck bed can get you into real deep with the game warden and the courts.

COVER SALE

Dear Dan, Is there any way possible to buy prints of your front covers? I live in Georgia but my brother who lives on Long Island always saves me your papers for me to read later on. I love the prints and I just wish I could buy them somewhere and have them framed for my house...thanks so much for the good reads!

Closed Restaurants in Amagansett

Dear Dan, I am a resident in the town of Amagansett and was very upset that the restaurants mentioned in your article are permanently closed. I was also upset with you because you mentioned all of the other restaurants in the area that remain opened but failed to and seemed like you deliberately did not mention Café On the Main, on Main Street in Amagansett. You mentioned the restaurants and eateries to the left, to the right, and across the street, but did not mention them. Why was that? Do you have a personal problem with Teddy, the owner (who is extremely nice and accommodating to his customers), or did you not like the meal you may have had there? Whatever your reason I think it you should have at least mentioned him. Since he has downsized the food and atmosphere are very good there. I do not think it was very nice of you to totally ignore this establishment. You know as well as I do that Amagansett and the rest of the Hamptons for that matter mainly survive the winter through support of the locals, and for you to purposely not support on of your own is down right mean! Just had to let you know how I felt. Maybe you will make a mention of it in your next issue.

I love this café. It didn't fit with the story. So I took artistic license to write about starvation in Amagansett. - DR

JUMBO JET LETTER

Dear Dan, Hi - I wanted to submit a photo of my partner, Jerry Gebo, showing off his copy of Dan's Papers while aboard the world's first commercial flight of the new Airbus A380 Super Jumbo Jet on October 25 between Singapore. We live in East Hampton though are currently in Singapore while I complete a long-term work assignment. I know you look for photos of the paper in unusual places and thought you might like this one!

Anyone else reading the paper on that flight? - DR
