Quogue Officer Killed

Off-duty Quogue Village police officer, Richard Kappel, 40, of Speonk, died last Sunday when he lost control of the Ferrari he was driving and hit a tree on Speonk Riverhead Road in Eastport. His passenger, Christian Gomez, 33, of New Hyde Park, the cousin of Kappel's wife, was also killed in the crash.

An eight-year veteran of the force, Kappel also served as a union officer and in the Air National Guard.
