Big Idea in a Smart Package
The current state of the economy, together with raised consciousness and concern about the environment, has led Americans to seek more practical, less costly automotive options. Many have discovered that being economical doesn't necessarily mean sacrificing driving pleasure or performance.
"American drivers are learning what their European counterparts have known for decades," stated Vincent Moscardino, general manager at Smart Center Smithtown, "that fuel efficiency and value can co-exist with driving quality and excitement. The new smart fortwo vehicles are living proof that you don't have to settle for less to enjoy an economically-sound, ecologically-sensitive car."
In a little over one year since its U.S. introduction, smart fortwo has gained significant popularity for its enhanced gas mileage (an EPA-estimated 41 mpg highway) and low-emissions, as well as its uniquely attractive appearance. However, as important as these qualities are, safety still ranks as the number one concern, especially in the compact car category.
"That was the very first concern at Mercedes-Benz when they began designing the smart fortwo line," said Moscardino. "They developed the car's exclusive 'tridion safety cell,' a steel housing that protects the driver and passenger like the hard shell of a nut. Add to that front and rear steel bumpers that absorb and dissipate the force of an impact, the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) that automatically controls the engine throttle and Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) through sensors, front and side airbags, plus advanced Electronic Brake Assist, and it's clear smart fortwo is a compact car that's big on protection."
The smart fortwo's appeal is equally evident in the corporate and consumer markets, according to numerous industry sources. For businesses seeking to lower operating costs without hindering efficiency, it's quickly becoming a staple in many company fleets, replacing larger, more expensive vehicles. It's proving to be particularly popular with small-to-medium sized firms with sizable sales staffs that work independently of each other. Many have reported savings of as much as 40% in fuel and mileage charges over prior vehicles.
This remarkable European import has also become a favorite in such suburban and residential enclaves as the Hamptons. "Consumers have found it to be the perfect 'around the area' vehicle," noted Moscardino, "often getting them as second or even third cars for local usage. A number of customers have told me they fill it less than once a month, and that their kids don't mind running errands anymore."
All three models - smart fortwo pure, passion coupe, and the passion cabriolet - come standard with such convenience features as a five-speed automated manual transmission with manual or automatic mode and a central remote locking system. Sporty, and packed with value, the smart fortwo passion coupe adds a panoramic roof, AC with climate control, power windows, and alloy wheels, while the passion cabriolet combines everything from the first two with an upgraded radio and sound system that includes an mp3-compatible in-dash and six-disc CD changer.
"Basically, the smart fortwo makes it possible to drive responsibly and economically, without giving up one iota of driving pleasure," Moscardino concludes. "What's most remarkable is that it delivers all this at a starting price just over $12,000. These cars really prove that big satisfaction can come in small packages."
