Deer Control 101

With the ability to consume around eight pounds of vegetation per day, a single deer can present a serious threat to a residential or commercial landscape. Literally overnight, a small family herd can totally ruin a property. Property owners know there's nothing worse than painstakingly creating a pristine outdoor environment, only to have their hard work and investment ravished by nature's four-legged friends.

Deer are motivated by opportunity and preference. If homeowners can find a way to eliminate both, they can deter deer. For a deer, the perfect opportunity is a chance to feed safely on a food of preference.

During the spring and summer seasons, deer feast on a variety of foods including green plants and shrubs. This means properties are in danger right now. Even though wild vegetation is plentiful during this time of the year, perfectly manicured, well-fertilized and lush landscapes are the food of choice for deer. In addition to being easily accessible and typically located in safe environments, these coddled landscapes are chock full of highly nutritious deer candy.

To effectively deter deer without using physical barriers, a multi-front approach, combining scent and sound, must be used. But because deer are smart and adapt to challenges, even that's not enough. You have to stay one step ahead of deer by continuously changing things up.

DeerTech, a recognized leader in full-service deer deterrent solutions, uses three circles of protection to deter deer by strategically placing patented ultrasonic units that disrupt a deer's ability to hear predators or sense danger, spraying proprietary scents developed by a wildlife biologist that smell and taste noxious to deer, and sending trained and certified technicians to the property every month to switch up the system so that the deer cannot adapt.

By preventing or reducing deer damage, services such as DeerTech enable people to plant what they want. Finally, property owners can change the conversation from planting deer resistant material to creating truly differentiated properties featuring spectacular plants that previously couldn't survive the onslaught of local deer.
