Twentysomething...By David Lion Rattiner Sex and Indiana Jones
I went to see Indiana Jones last weekend. I had extremely low expectations because my friends told me that it was a stinker. Well, all of my friends are completely wrong. The new Indiana Jones is awesome. IT'S INDIANA JONES FOR CRYING OUT LOUD. And I'm sorry, but Harrison Ford is the coolest person on the planet.
I love going to the movies, but because I'm a guy, I was protesting the new Sex and The City movie. Yesterday I was hanging out with Pentagon John and his family at his uncle's house in Amagansett when Sex and The City came up. One of the guests had seen the movie with her daughter. "There should have been fewer sex scenes in the movie. I'm sitting there watching it with my daughter and all of the sudden full-frontal nudity happens, with humping and everything, and I have to say I felt a little awkward."
I made a mental note to go see the new Sex and The City movie.
Saturday night I went out to the Surf Lodge in Montauk, which has been getting mixed reviews. A Montauk local will tell you how terrible it is that such a New York City scene has bludgeoned its way into Montauk. Some city people will tell you that it is "just fabulous" and that they know the owner and blah, blah, blah, when, of course, they have never actually been there. Okay, here is my opinion on the Surf Lodge - AWESOME for two reasons. One is because it doesn't have a night club-ish feel at all and two is because it doesn't have a night club-ish feel at all. It has a similar vibe of Sunset Beach on Shelter Island, except it stays open until 4 a.m.
On a random note, here are my thoughts on the upcoming election.
A man named Monte Farber, a psychic who lives in East Hampton, fascinates me. He and his wife Amy have enjoyed tremendous success selling books about the supernatural. I'm not much of a believer in this sort of thing, but I am a believer in Monte. Anyhow, he has a very interesting psychic prediction about the election. He told me that his psychic prediction is that John McCain has a hidden illness and that Mitt Romney is going to re-enter the race and win it all. Yeah, my mind is blown by it too. But I wanted to put that out there and perhaps jinx the premonition, but also because I will be a little freaked out if it actually happens and will ask Monte for stock tips in the future.
Without a doubt summer is here. Even with the current state of the economy the Hamptons has experienced so much tourism. And it hit me the other day that not only are more Europeans here because of the strong Euro, but also fewer people are traveling to Europe this summer because of the weak dollar. I saw the first part coming, but didn't see the latter. So that's a good thing, if you look at it in a horrendously one-sided way. It would be nice if the dollar were the strongest currency in the world. Saying you're happy that the weak dollar is bringing more Europeans here is like saying you're happy that your biceps are getting bigger because of your wheelchair.
But whatever.
Lastly, I'd like to make a quick comment on Vered. Basically, she is a genius. You can't pay for the kind of publicity she has generated from the incident at her gallery. I've never seen anybody take a publicity opportunity like this and run so far with the ball. Go get 'em, Vered.
