Take Five 2007

This weekend offers a variety of music and special events. Yvette Malavet-Blum and Bob Boutcher perform Latin rhythms in Southampton on Friday. Acclaimed British blues/rock artist Joan Armatrading is at Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center on Saturday and classic roots/folksinger/songwriter Caroline Doctorow plays in Sag Harbor on Saturday. Reggae masters Toots & The Maytals are at Amagansett's Stephen Talkhouse this weekend with Marc Cohn coming in on Monday. The Hal McKusick Jazz Trio headlines Sag Harbor's "Strawberry Jazz" fest Sunday afternoon.

As for this weekend's special events: Landscape Pleasures at Southampton's Parrish Art Museum; Hamptons Auto Classic and Concours d'Elegance in Bridgehampton; Montauk Harbor Festival; Bay Street Theatre opens its second production next Tuesday, and there are several interesting speakers and a film at other local venues. THEATER

Bay Street Theatre's next production is The Night Season, a comedy by British playwright Rebecca Lenkiewicz. A hit originating at London's National Theater, this is its American premiere starring Katherine Helmond, Michael O'Keefe and Kellie Overbey. Performances begin with pay-what-you-can next Tuesday evening courtesy of BookHampton (for tickets sold at the box office). Hampton Theatre Company has Jean Anouilh's romantic comedy Leocadia, which opened 50 years ago on Broadway as Time Remembered with Richard Burton and Helen Hayes. Showtimes are Thursday to Saturday evenings at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 5 p.m. through June 17. Gateway Playhouse in Bellport continues its unusual ice skating musical starring former Olympic champion Oksana Baiul. The Frank D'Agostino show is called Cold As Ice and runs through June 17. Tickets (39-$43) are sold at the box office or online at www.gatewayplayhouse.com.

MUSIC

Southampton's Rogers Memorial Library presents a cabaret-style evening tonight with songstress Yvette Malavet-Blum and pianist/guitarist Bob Boutcher performing Caribbean-style jazz, American standards and Latin rhythms. The show starts at 7 p.m. and is complementary but voluntary donations are accepted. Please call (631) 283-0774 ext. 523 to reserve seats.

Joan Armatrading, the accomplished British blues/rock/pop singer and guitarist, brings her new blues show to Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center on Saturday at 8 p.m. Tickets are $50 to $80, sold at the box office (call 631-288-1500) or online at www.whbpac.org.

Folksinger/songwriter Caroline Doctorow and trio will be at Canio's Books, Sag Harbor, on Saturday at 6 p.m. They will perform some old favorites plus songs from her new CD Follow You Down. There is no admission charge, but donations are accepted.

Sag Harbor's Christ Episcopal Church holds its annual "Strawberry Jazz" concert this Sunday, 2 p.m., featuring the Hal McKusick Jazz Trio. A homemade strawberry dessert reception follows the performance. Tickets are $25 adults, $15 students ($30 at the door) at Canio's Books, 290 Main St., Sag Harbor.

Something Like Happiness, a Czech comic drama with awards from many film festivals, is the Friday night movie at Sag Harbor's John Jermain Library. The screening starts at 6:30 p.m. but arrive a little before for good seats (free admission).

Marilyn Nissenson will discuss her new biography, The Lady Upstairs: Dorothy Schiff and The New York Post, at BookHampton, Southampton, on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. Dolly Schiff was the power at the Post from 1939 until 1976. The East Hampton Historical Society presents authors Anne Surchin and Gary Lawrence discussing their new book Houses of the Hamptons (1880-1930) at Clinton Academy, 151 Main St., East Hampton, at 6 p.m.

Bridgehampton's Alison Restaurant and East End Books present dinner, a talk and signed copies of Meisel & Sann's Gourmet Shops New York on Sun., 6:30 p.m. (631-537-7100).

BENEFITS and SPECIAL EVENTS

The Hamptons Auto Classic runs today through Sunday at the Hayground School, Mitchell Lane, Bridgehampton. Classic foreign and domestic sports cars and sedans from 1896 through the 1980s will be displayed, with some at auction on Sunday. Bidders' cocktail party is tonight at 6 p.m. ($35 donation to Habitat for Humanity); general admission Sat. at 8 a.m. ($15), with the Hamptons Concours d'Elegance Auction on Sunday (general admission $25; gates open at 10 a.m.).

The Parrish Art Museum's outstanding Landscape Pleasures weekend this year features "Capturing the Garden in Photography: Then and Now." It opens Saturday, 8:30 a.m., with continental breakfast and then overview lecture by landscape historian Leslie Rose Close. Photographer Erica Lennard speaks at 9:45 a.m. followed by photographer Joel Meyerowitz, Ken Druse, Perry Guillot and Wendy Chamberlin. There is a cocktail party Saturday at the home and gardens of Parrish trustee Jan Cowles, and a garden tour Sunday of six extraordinary East End gardens. Montauk Harbor Festival Weekend starts with a dinner party tonight at Inlet Seafood. Saturday, the Mighty Montauk Triathlon starts at 7:30 a.m., then from noon to 6 p.m., there's wine tasting, games, Coast Guard and surf-casting demonstrations, plus special children's activities - all on West Lake Drive. There is also music Saturday afternoon and a concert with the Nancy Atlas Project on Sunday afternoon at Gosman's dockside stage.

Stony Brook's Center for Food, Wine and Culture has "A Taste of Summer" on Saturday, 4 to 6 p.m. at the Southampton campus. Local wineries', farmers' and bakers' offerings are featured; admission is $25 - call Ginny Clancy at (631) 632-9404.
