Memorial Day Weekend, Equestrian Style

If this is your first weekend in the Hamptons since last September, chances are you are experiencing some serious horse withdrawal and you are probably looking to pet a velvety nose or two before you head back to work. Luckily, there are some exciting equestrian adventures to be had this Memorial Day Weekend in the Hamptons and all you need to bring with you is a car, and maybe an apple or two. Deep Hollow Ranch

If you've never seen the bluffs of Montauk from horseback, here's your chance. Deep Hollow Ranch is the oldest working ranch in America, and their specialty is guided beach and trail rides. They also teach the rich history of Montauk's wilder days during action-packed performances featuring their beautiful steeds and a talented group of cowboys, American Indians and historical figures. They have horses for riders of all levels, so even non-riders can join in the fun. Call (631) 668-3901 or visit www.deephollowranch.com for more information.

Amaryllis Farm Equine Rescue
If you want to see a working horse rescue in action, take a trip to Amaryllis Farm Equine Rescue in Sagaponack North. Christine Barrett-Distefano has built a Hamptons heaven for horses who were once bound for slaughter and uses Parelli natural horsemanship and other gentle techniques to train them for their new careers as hunters, jumpers, western horses and pasture pals. The best part of the whole operation is that visitors are always welcome!

On Saturday, May 26, from noon until four p.m., the rescue is holding their annual Country Fair at their main barn. There will be food, drinks, games, pony rides and, of course, lots of horses looking for good homes! The main barn is located at 93 Merchants Path in Sagaponack (off of Sagg Road, near Woelffer Estate Vineyard). For more information, call (631) 537-7335 or visit www.forrascal.com.

Tim Hayes Natural Horsemanship Clinic
On Saturday and Sunday, head on over to Brentwood to take part in a natural horsemanship clinic run by Long Island's most famous horse whisperer, Tim Hayes. You can bring your horse, or just stop by to watch Tim work his gentle magic on horses with fear, aggression or training problems. Tim works with horses trained in all disciplines and has been featured in The New York Times and in documentaries on Cablevision and Plum TV. For more information, call Tim at (631) 329-5840 or (800) 959-3101, or e-mail him at tim@hayeisforhorses.com

No matter which events you choose, this weekend is sure to be filled with fun, horsey activities for riders and horse lovers of all ages. Don't forget to check back next week - this is only the beginning of a very exciting season!
