Comedy Comes to Bay Street Theatre

The comedy line-up for the 2008 summer season at Bay Street Theatre is selling like crazy, as tickets recently went on sale for 13 great shows, which start on June 9 and continue through August 31.

"We set the bar for comedy in the Hamptons, and this will be our sixth season," said Mike de Santi, a former associate producer at Bay Street who now books their comedy shows. He said this popular series first began with comedian Lewis Black, "who kicked the doors open for us, and it just continued from there."

He said although Black cannot be here this year, "we still have a lot of heavyweights."

"I truly believe this is the best year yet, for our comedy club," said de Santi. What makes this year different, he says, is that he's booked a lot more movie star/comedians, like Kevin Pollak, who appeared in A Few Good Men, The Usual Suspects and Casino. Comedian Jamie Kennedy, of Three Kings and As Good As It Gets, will also take the stage, as will Tracy Morgan and Judah Friedlander, both of the hit TV show "30 Rock." Susie Essman, of the hit HBO show "Curb Your Enthusiasm," will also appear at Bay Street, and tickets to her show are almost sold out.

In addition, comedy legend Richard Lewis, who is listed among the Top 50 stand-up comedians of all time by Comedy Central, will appear, along with comedy legend Caroline Rhea, whose popular late night talk show catapulted her into fame.

"Caroline Rhea is the suburban housewife's favorite, and what's great about our comedy line-up is that we cover all age ranges of the audience, from young to old," said deSanti. "We hit the goldmine this year because we are covering the interests of all age groups. So there is something for everyone at Bay Street." He said Rhea will also be one of the auctioneers at Bay Street's upcoming gala benefit on July 19.
