Honoring the Artist: Amy Zerner
We've all heard of the term "Renaissance Man." Cover artist Amy Zerner is a true "Renaissance Woman." If we think about it for a bit longer, however, we can even say she's a woman of all ages, not just the Renaissance.
Q: You've been quite busy this last year. In fact, you and Monte are always busy.
A: Yes. We just wrote 26 books for Barnes and Nobel. I remember we visualized that we would have our books on a shelf in a book store. Then we forgot about it for several years.
Q: I've seen the jackets online - they are really exquisite. That's really what you're known for on the East End. How do you work with clients when you make one of your jackets?
A: They're custom-made, so I interview people to learn about their life, what their colors are.
Q: You've said colors are really important; they can give a sense of calmness or energy. Tell me what colors Barack and Hillary should be wearing?
A: Barack wore a green tie at the last debate. That gave him a sense of calm. Hillary should wear more yellow. It's a power color.
Q: What is it about creating clothes that has meaning for you? They are really art forms.
A: I like when a jacket I make meets the person who is meant to wear it. I also believe that jackets should be on a person's body. Art just hanging on a wall is a thing of the past. You know Monte wears my jackets, too. I say, "I married a billboard."
Q: Speaking of your husband, you have a really close relationship. You have been working together every waking hour of the day. Are you two the same or different as far as abilities?
A: Monte has a feminine side; he's very intuitive. But he's also very scientific. I have a masculine side. For example, I like to involve myself in the business aspect, making presentations, seeing how far I can take things.
Q: How did the two of you meet?
A: At the filming of a porno movie. Really. He was a musician in the band that was playing for the movie. I just went to watch. But everybody was clothed. That was in 1974. We've been together for 33 years. It gets better all the time.
Q: Considering that you first met at a porno event, it's funny that now your life evolves around spirituality. For example, your books deal with the power of affirmation. Meaning what?
A: Meaning first that we're all connected. We all want the same things. We can all make a difference. It sounds corny. Find a way to meditate that's right for you.
Q: In a nutshell, what would you say?
A: Buddha said, " All that we are is the result of what we have thought."
