DOWN IN THE TUBE

Among those spotted using the subway this week were Michele Obama, who was seen on the Quogue platform and said she was out here to get seeds for her garden. Also seen here were Julia Roberts, Mercedes Reuhl and Paris Hilton, who was seen on the Southampton platform and said she was out here to check on her parents' house.

NEW GROUP BEING FORMED

The Hampton Subway is willing to form a Hampton Subway Celebrity Watchers Club if anyone shows any interest in it. Riders would report sightings of celebrities over the Internet to our headquarters in Hampton Bays, and would receive, in return, free passes on the subway. You'll get three passes for A listers, two passes for B listers and one pass for C listers. It would be up to the management of the Subway to determine which list any particular celebrity is on and that decision will be final.

Any sighting received at HSCWC will be sent out again over the Internet to all members of the club so that members can descend upon whichever platform is indicated and thus swarm the celebrity, surround him or her, ask for autographs and pick at their clothing. If you have any interest in this, please contact Beatrice at our home office in Hampton Bays.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

We wish to congratulate Henry Bastion, of East Quogue, on his birthday. Bastion, who is a subway car dispatcher working at our yard in Montauk, won the annual award for most continuous days working without a break in 2007, on the job 24 hours a day seven days a week between February 14 and October 3 that year. Birthday cards should be sent to him c/o Southampton Hospital where he remains hospitalized.

SOUVENIR SUBWAY BOOK NOW ON SALE

Our souvenir book One Year on the Hampton Subway has now gone on sale in all four Bookhampton Book Stores. (Amagansett, East Hampton, Sag Harbor and Southampton.) It can also be bought either online or by telephone. Buy it at danshamptons.com or by calling 631-537-0500. The cost is $18.48 plus tax.

COMMISSIONER ASPINALL'S MESSAGE

With Bernie Madoff's Montauk home now in the hands of the Feds, it has been suggested by bloggers on our Web site that we consider offering a spur from the Lobster Roll station east along the ocean for two miles ending at Madoff's oceanfront home in Hither Hills so sightseers and tourists can photograph and walk around it. We think this would be a great boon for the tourist industry on the East End, and would expect that those wanting the spur would pay an additional turnstile fee to go see it, which could perhaps be enough to pay for its construction. On the other hand, new owners who buy the house when the government auctions it off might fence it off from the subway stop there so as not to have the intrusion of sightseers. We intend to consider this proposal at our next board meeting.
