Romancing the Hamptons: Special Section Issue #45 - February 13, 2009 From the zany romance of Woody Allen and Diane Keaton in Annie Hall (1977) to the more mature but equally zany romance of Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton in Something's Gotta Give (2003) the Hamptons has often played the backdrop for cinematic romance. It's not commonly known that in the early years of the silent film industry studios based in Astoria, Queens and Flatbush were churning out many of the day’s most popular films. Couples sitting in darkened theaters across the country watching the "IT" girl, Clara Bow cavort on a beach had little idea she was actually in Southampton and not someplace more foreign and exotic. Exotic or not, the East End with it's picturesque scenery, sparkling waterways and long history as a resort Mecca for the rich and famous has undoubtedly played a part in more romances than we’ll ever know. Just think of the famous couples who have lived their romances out (successfully or not) on the beaches, fields and wooded acres of the Hamptons: Jackson Pollack and Lee Krasner, Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller, Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley, Ron Perlman and Ellen Barkin, Jerry Seinfeld and Jessica Sklar, Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick. The list we are sure, is endless. Than there are the many romantic stories of the rest of the population on the East End, the special dates, romantic dinners and waterfront weddings we’ve all taken part in. It's really those romances, the ones that take place out of the spotlight but still surrounded by the beauty of our area, that makes the East End one of the most romantic places in which to live. Everyone living out here gets caught up in the romance of the area at some point – and what better time of year than Valentines Day? Plans are already under way for Dan’s Papers 31st Annual Potato Hampton "Minithon". We are currently looking at Sunday, May 31st as the date for this annual 5K race around the farm fields South of the highway in Bridgehampton.
